Let’s Talk: Lower the Price Tag On Your Dream Wedding

June 23, 2022

The price tag on a wedding can spiral out of control really fast. And, with inflation on the rise, your dream wedding may cost even more these days.

To give you a better idea of what an average wedding cost, Louisiana couples spent on average $18,337 to get married in 2021. With the pressure to impress others and afford your special day, you may be tempted to normalize wedding debt. In fact, according to one survey commissioned by LendEDU in 2021, one in three couples goes into debt to pay for their wedding costs. But, is going into debt really how you plan to start your marriage off?

Nonetheless, where does this leave you? The answer is simple: you need to lower the price tag on your dream wedding. Here are a few tips on how to cut wedding costs.

Set a date… during off-peak season.

Expect to pay more if you plan to get married between May and October. October weddings are particularly popular in New Orleans. The cheapest months to get married tend to be January, March, April, and November. Wedding venues and vendors are likely to have more availability during off-peak season, which in turn allows you more flexibility on choosing a date. Once you set that date, to save even more money, you can go digital with your invitations.

Set a spending limit… within your means.

Challenge yourself to live simply, so that you do not overspend. Start counting your money, set it aside, and start saving. Determine what your spending limit for your wedding will be BEFORE you start spending. Plan to include between 5%-10% of your budget to account for any unforeseen costs. The following is an example of a wedding budget breakdown:

  • Reception: 50%
  • Ceremony: 15%
  • Photography: 10%
  • Wedding Planner: 10%
  • Dress and Tux: 10%
  • Miscellaneous/Cushion: 5%

Purchase thrifty décor and attire… that doesn't break the bank.

Shop around your local thrift and consignment stores. You may find some hidden gems at affordable prices to use as décor. Also, to save on the costs of a wedding dress, consider buying a dress from a non-bridal or online retailer, a sample dress from a local boutique, or a pre-owned dress. If you would like to spend even less, consider renting a wedding dress at nearly a fraction of the purchase price.

Design floral arrangements… that can be repurposed.

If you would like to save money on your floral arrangements, talk with your local florist on designing ceremony arrangements that can be repurposed for the reception. For instance, you may be able to repurpose bouquets into table centerpieces or floral décor for the welcome table.

These are just a few tips on how to cut costs to afford your dream wedding with today’s rising prices. With all the above considered, we hope you can lower the price tag on your dream wedding.
